The Anglo-Catholic History Society

News update—August 2018

Autumn lecture

There is a change of speaker and subject of the 1st October lecture. The talk on Fr Ommaney of Sheffield will be given in 2020. In its place we are happy to welcome one of our post-graduate bursary holders, Dan Cruickshank, who will present a paper entitled From the Sublime to the Ridiculous: Ritualism & Anglo-Catholicism in the Evidence of the Royal Commission into Ecclesiastical Discipline, 1904-6. As usual, the lecture will take place at 7 p.m. in St Clement Danes church.

On this occasion, we plan to have a table at St Clements of theological books for sale in aid of ACHS funds. These are second-hand theological books and pamphlets of Anglo-Catholic interest donated to the Society for re-sale.

Autumn church walk, Saturday, 6th October

This year the autumn walk will take place in Brighton and is planned and led by ACHS member, Malcolm Kemp. As the use of a coach would be totally impracticable either for access or parking at these churches, it will be a walking tour with the option of two bus rides.

To join the walk it will be necessary for members make their own way to the City. We meet at the train station at 10:30. As is our custom on these walks, there is no booking form necessary. Members may join the walk at Brighton Station. A small charge of £10 will be collected on the day to cover the cost of tea, notes and donations to the churches visited.

We plan to visit the following churches: St Bartholomew, The Annunciation, St Martin and then, after lunch, St Michael & All Angels and St Paul.

We will meet under the large computerised departure board on the concourse at Brighton railway station at 10:30 a.m. If you arrive early and need refreshments at the station before 10:30 a.m, as you come through the exit barriers there are three “sit down” cafes (including Pret) on your left behind the ticket machines. Public toilets (currently free) are at the right hand end of the same block of buildings.

If you are planning to travel from London to Brighton by train, please check for delays due to planned engineering works on Saturday.
